Prelude to Antarctica
Better late than never, isn't that what they say?
Welcome to the bottom of the world. After many letters home, my cousin Donna convinced me to share what's been happening here. You will find those letters in the archive to the left - pretty much as they were written. New entries will be added (hopefully) about once a week. Just click on the link at the end of each post to go to the next.
The picture above is of me (click any picture for a larger view) climbing a cairn of stones on Arrival Heights, overlooking Winter Quarters Bay. Beyond that, McMurdo Sound stretches to the coast of the Antarctic continent, a strange place that I had long imagined, but other people visited, other people wrote about, and other people explored.
A strange place that I always knew I would never see.
This is Mike Bair signing off from McMurdo Station, Ross Island, Antarctica. (July, 2005)

This should be interesting. I am glad your cousin finally convinced you.
I just hit "next blog" and yours popped up. Tell us why you're there and what you're doing and how long you'll be there!
And so the world will finally get to see what I was talking about. I smell a publishing contract! Blog on!
I enjoyed reading your letters from Antarctica all over again. I'm glad you got them all up there so others could catch up. We all can't wait to read what happens next! Keep Warm!
